This can vary widely, depending on the features of your track. The most basic analog set with plastic track can be purchased for only a few hundred dollars. A starter digital track with 2 cars and controllers is about $600, and each additional controller is about $70, and so is each additional car. All of these are just a very basic design, no scenery, no lap tracking, no permanent mounted base to keep the track from coming apart. A very basic track mounted to a 4×8 sheet of plywood and some artificial grass can easily be done for under $1000. However, Adding features like a telemetry, trackside cameras, cabinetry, routed wood, pit stops, grandstands, elevation changes… a one of a kind track like that can easily take weeks to build and cost tens of thousands.
How much space is required?
A basic slot car track can generally fit on a standard 4×8 sheet of plywood. The largest we have built so far to date was 24’x14′, but certainly larger is possible.
A basic analog track running with DC voltage requires one lane per car. The limiting factor is width, and generally no more than six or 8 lanes, and those are quite large. An alternating current track can double the number of cars, but there is no passing, and each car must be fitted with a diode, with opposing polarities to run 2 on one lane. A basic digital track can run 6 user controlled cars, and frequently two or more computer controlled cars as well. A high end digital system using Slot.It Oxigen can run up to 20 user controlled cars at a time.
